The dream team
Dave Karvelas is a veteran Capitol Hill chief of staff who served for fifteen years (2006-2021) as the principal policy adviser for Congressman Vern Buchanan, a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee. During his service with Congressman Buchanan, Dave worked on a number of significant policy initiatives.
As Buchanan’s Chief of Staff, Dave oversaw an ambitious legislative agenda that produced 24 bills signed into law under four Presidents — George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald J. Trump and Joe Biden. Those bills covered health reform, child protection, the environment and animal welfare, among other issues.
Dave also served as chief of staff for two other prominent members of the Ways and Means Committee: former Health Chairwoman Nancy Johnson of Connecticut and Congressman Dick Zimmer of New Jersey. During his 10 year tenure with Congresswoman Johnson, Dave helped advance major legislation that included creation of the Children’s Health Insurance Program and an expansion of Medicare coverage. In addition to directing policy, Dave oversaw strategic communications for all three members.
Prior to his career on Capitol Hill, Dave worked for The Associated Press and several newspapers as a political reporter and analyst, covering races for Congress, U.S. Senate, governor, as well as Presidential campaigns.
A native of New York City, Dave graduated from the University of Maine with bachelor’s degrees in journalism and history. He lives in Arlington, Virginia with his wife, Deborah and they have three grown children.
